The Baralacha Pass, our first key point on the tour, is
ahead of us. We have to cover 4,392 mts. today; an ascent
of 1,400 mts. has to be vanquished. The landscape around
us turns more barren having passed the tree line. The pass
is junction of two caravan routes and the end of our crossroad.
Three rivers rise on this flat pass, Chandre, Bhaga and
one of the source river of Zanskar, flowing north to the
Indus, which we will follow now. An exciting descent via

DAY
11 - PANG / RUPSHU
A small
ascent we have to overcome to reach the more plane, being
on 4,700 mts., a dry high altitude desert, typical for the
arid Rupshu. Only Changpa nomads are living here with their
yaks, goats and sheeps, grazing at an altitude up to 5,600
mts. We see their tents from yak hair or we meet them while
they change their grazing grounds hidden in the bends of
this oversized hilly landscape, only on the tops covered
with snow. The Changpa nomads still transport the salt by
using their goats to all corners of Ladakh. The lake on
Tsokar has no discharge, however, the connection to another
small lake feeds it with fresh water. This is the native
place of the almost extinct Kyang, the wild Donkey formerly
populating the highland of the Rupshu & Tschangthang.
Also geese as well as the Tibetan laughing gull are living
here. The lake is a few kilometers from our camp.

which are boarded by Chorten and Mani walls. The ascent
is easy. After 3 hours we are rewarded with a gorgeous view
of the mountain range to the north, the Karakourm &
the descending road down to the Indus valley. We cycle downhill

by the river Gya after the longest stage of 92 Kms.

overlooks the vast plan of the Indus valley & the view
from the roof of monastery is impressive. Past Shey, the

Royal family and the stone relieves of the 5 Dhyani Buddha's
